    The guide

How to add voiceover to a PowerPoint presentation

You have two options: record your own voice inside PowerPoint, or use AI narration with SlideSpeak. Here's an honest comparison of both approaches.

    Option A

    Record in PowerPoint

    1. 1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint for Windows or Mac
    2. 2. Click Slide Show → Record Slide Show
    3. 3. Click the red record button and speak into your microphone
    4. 4. Stop recording on each slide, then advance to the next
    5. 5. Export as video: File → Export → Create a Video

    Limitations of this method

    • • Requires a microphone and a quiet space
    • • One slip of the tongue means re-recording from the start
    • • Not available on PowerPoint for web or older versions
    • • Audio quality varies — background noise, breathing, etc.
    • • No multi-language option — you must speak the language
    • • Takes as long as the presentation runs — 20 slides = 20 min of recording
    Recommended

    Option B

    AI narration with SlideSpeak

    1. 1. Upload your .pptx to SlideSpeak — no account needed
    2. 2. Type a script for each slide (or leave blank to read slide text)
    3. 3. Choose from 8 studio-quality AI voices in 59 languages
    4. 4. Click "Generate all voiceovers" — done in under 60 seconds
    5. 5. Export as MP4 video, PPTX with audio, ZIP, or a shareable link

    Why this is better

    • • No microphone — no background noise, no re-takes
    • • 20-slide deck narrated in under 60 seconds
    • • Change one word, regenerate just that one slide
    • • 59 languages — narrate in any language instantly
    • • Works on any device in any browser — nothing to install
    • • Google Chirp 3 HD voices — genuinely sounds natural

How to add voiceover to Google Slides

Google Slides has no built-in voiceover feature. The workaround: go to File → Download → Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx), then upload the file to SlideSpeak. You'll have studio-quality AI narration in under 2 minutes.

How to add voiceover to a Canva presentation

Canva's voiceover recording is basic and lacks multi-language support. Instead, export your Canva deck as PowerPoint (.pptx)from the Share menu, then upload it to SlideSpeak for AI narration with 59 language options.

How to add voiceover to Apple Keynote

Keynote has a basic narration recording mode but no AI voice option. Export your Keynote file as PowerPoint (.pptx)via File → Export To, then upload it to SlideSpeak for AI voiceover in any language.

Upload any .pptx, .ppt, Google Slides export, or Canva export

    How it works

From file to finished — in 4 steps

No software to install. No account required for the free trial. Just upload and go.

    1

    Upload your presentation

Drag and drop your PowerPoint file (.pptx or .ppt) onto the upload zone above — or click to browse. You can also upload individual slide images (.jpg, .png, .webp) if you don't have a PPTX file.

    What happens next:

    • Your PPTX is converted to images — one per slide — right in your browser
    • A copy of your original PPTX is kept so animations stay intact when you export
    • You're taken straight into the Studio — no extra steps

    Supports: .pptx · .ppt · .jpg · .png · .webp — up to 50MB

    2

Write your script (or let the AI read the slide)

In the Studio, you'll see each slide displayed one at a time with a script box underneath it. This is where you type the words you want the AI to speak for that slide.

Option A — Type your own script

Write exactly what you want said. The AI voice reads your words verbatim — great for compliance training where exact phrasing matters.

Option B — Leave the box blank

The AI will read whatever text is already visible on your slide. Perfect if your slides already have good content text on them.

Tip: You can mix and match — write scripts for some slides and leave others blank.

    3

    Pick a voice and language

At the top of the Studio, choose your voice and language from the dropdowns. Your selection applies to all slides — but you can change it at any time and regenerate.

    4

    Generate and preview

Click "Generate all voiceovers" to create audio for every slide at once, or use the mic button on a single slide to generate one at a time. A 20-slide deck typically takes under 60 seconds.

    Preview before downloading

Each slide has a play button — listen to the generated audio and make sure you're happy with it before exporting anything.

    Re-generate anytime

Not happy with a slide? Edit the script and click the mic button again. Just that one slide is re-generated — not the whole deck.

    Studio guide

What you'll see inside the Studio

The Studio is where all the work happens. Here's exactly what each part does.

    Slide viewer

Your slide is displayed as a large preview image. Use the left and right arrows to move between slides, or click the slide number to jump to any slide. The current slide number is always shown (e.g. "Slide 3 of 12").

    Script box

Below each slide is a text box labelled "Script for this slide". Type what you want the AI to say. If you leave it blank, the AI reads the text on the slide itself. Your scripts are saved automatically as you type.

    Voice and language selector

At the top of the Studio, two dropdowns let you choose your voice and language. These apply to all slides. Change them at any time — then regenerate any or all slides to hear the new voice.

    Generate buttons

"Generate all" creates voiceovers for every slide in one go. The mic icon on each slide generates just that one slide. A green checkmark appears when a slide has audio ready to preview or export.

    Audio preview player

Once a slide has audio generated, a play button appears. Click it to hear the narration for that slide. If you're not happy, edit the script and regenerate — only that slide is re-processed.

    Export button

When you're ready, click "Export" to open the export panel. You'll see all four export options — ZIP, PPTX with audio, MP4 video, and Publish online. You can export in any format, as many times as you like.

    Export options

Four ways to export — explained

Every project includes all four export formats. Here's exactly what each one gives you and when to use it.

    Export 1 — ZIP file (images + MP3s)

Best for: LMS platforms like Moodle, Articulate, iSpring, Canvass

Downloads a ZIP archive containing two files per slide: a JPEG image of the slide and an MP3 audio file of the voiceover. The files are named to match — e.g. slide_01.jpg and slide_01.mp3.

    What's inside the ZIP

    • slide_01.jpg · slide_01.mp3
    • slide_02.jpg · slide_02.mp3
    • slide_03.jpg · slide_03.mp3
    • ...and so on for every slide

How to use it in Moodle

    • 1. Unzip the folder
    • 2. Upload each image to a lesson page
    • 3. Attach the matching MP3 as an audio element

    When to choose this

    • You're uploading to an LMS
    • You want raw files to use in Articulate or iSpring
    • You need to keep images and audio separate

Export 2 — PPTX with audio embedded

    Animations preserved

Best for: sharing with a team, presenting in PowerPoint, keeping animations

Takes your original PPTX file and embeds the generated MP3 audio directly into each slide. Open it in PowerPoint and you'll see a small speaker icon on each slide — click it to play that slide's narration. Crucially, all your animations and transitions are completely untouched because we embed audio into your original file rather than converting it to images.

    What you get

    • A single .pptx file
    • Audio embedded per slide
    • Speaker icon on each slide
    • All animations intact

    How to use it

    • 1. Download the file
    • 2. Open in PowerPoint (Windows or Mac)
    • 3. Click the speaker icon on any slide to play
    • 4. Or present normally — audio auto-plays

    When to choose this

    • You're sharing with colleagues
    • Your slides have animations
    • You want to keep editing the PPTX
    • You present live and want optional narration

    Export 3 — MP4 video

Best for: YouTube, website embedding, social media, video players

Stitches your slides and voiceovers together into a single MP4 video file. Each slide is shown for exactly as long as its audio takes — so a 30-second narration means that slide stays on screen for 30 seconds. The result is a standard video anyone can watch in any video player, browser, or media app.

    What you get

    • A single .mp4 video file
    • Each slide timed to its audio
    • Full voiceover throughout
    • Standard HD quality

    How to use it

    • 1. Download the .mp4 file
    • 2. Upload to YouTube, Vimeo, or your website
    • 3. Or attach it to an email, LMS, or Teams channel

    When to choose this

    • You want to post it on YouTube
    • You're embedding on a website
    • Learners just need to press play
    • You need a non-interactive version

Note: Because slides become video frames, PowerPoint animations are not shown in the MP4 export — each slide appears as a static image. If animations matter, use the PPTX export instead.

Export 4 — Publish online (shareable link)

    New

Best for: sharing with clients, embedding in emails or websites, no-download access

Publishes your narrated presentation as a live web page with its own URL. Anyone who clicks the link opens the presentation in their browser — they can click through slides, hear the narration for each one, and see your animations. No PowerPoint needed. No download required.Powered by Microsoft Office Online.

    What you get

    • A shareable web link (URL)
    • Full interactive slide experience
    • Audio plays per slide in browser
    • Works on any device, any browser

    How to use it

    • 1. Click "Publish online" in the export panel
    • 2. Copy the link that appears
    • 3. Paste into an email, Teams message, or website
    • 4. Your recipient clicks and views — done

    When to choose this

    • Sending to clients or students
    • Embedding in an email campaign
    • Sharing on a website or intranet
    • When recipients can't open PPTX files

    FAQ

Common questions about adding voiceover to presentations

How do I add a voiceover to a PowerPoint presentation?

Upload your .pptx file to SlideSpeak. Type a script for each slide — or leave the box blank and the AI will read whatever text is on the slide. Choose one of 8 Google Chirp 3 HD voices, pick your language, and click 'Generate all voiceovers'. Your 20-slide deck is narrated in under 60 seconds. Export as a narrated MP4 video, a PPTX with audio embedded, a ZIP of images + MP3s, or a shareable web link.

How do I add voiceover to Google Slides?

Google Slides doesn't have a built-in AI voiceover feature. The fastest workaround: open your Google Slides presentation, go to File → Download → Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx), then upload that file to SlideSpeak. You'll have studio-quality AI narration in under 2 minutes, with your full slide layout preserved.

How do I add narration to a PowerPoint without recording my voice?

SlideSpeak lets you add professional AI narration to any PowerPoint without a microphone. Upload your .pptx, type what you want said for each slide (or leave blank to read slide text), choose a voice, and click Generate. No recording session. No retakes. No background noise. A 30-slide deck takes about 60–90 seconds.

How do I convert a PowerPoint to a video with narration?

Upload your .pptx to SlideSpeak, write or generate voiceover scripts for each slide, then click Export → MP4. SlideSpeak stitches each slide image together with its audio and produces a single .mp4 file — each slide stays on screen for exactly as long as its narration plays. Download and upload to YouTube, Vimeo, your website, or an LMS.

How do I add voiceover to a Canva presentation?

Canva's built-in voiceover is basic and limited to recording your own voice. For AI narration in 59 languages: export your Canva presentation via Share → Download → Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx), then upload it to SlideSpeak. Your slide layouts come across cleanly and you can narrate in any language.

How do I add voiceover to Apple Keynote?

In Keynote, go to File → Export To → PowerPoint, then upload the resulting .pptx to SlideSpeak. You'll get AI narration in any of 59 languages with 8 voice options — far beyond what Keynote's own narration recording supports.

What is the best free AI voiceover tool for PowerPoint?

SlideSpeak offers the highest-quality free trial for adding AI voiceover to PowerPoint. The free tier gives you 5 slides with no account required — powered by Google Chirp 3 HD voices, which are genuinely natural-sounding. Other tools like Murf.ai or ElevenLabs can generate audio but require you to manually sync audio to slides yourself. SlideSpeak handles the whole workflow end-to-end.

Can I add voiceover to a presentation in multiple languages?

Yes. SlideSpeak supports 59 languages including Australian, American, British and Indian English, Spanish (Spain and US), French (France and Canada), German, Italian, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, and many more. Switch languages at any time and regenerate — the same script is narrated in the new language without retyping anything.

How do I make a PowerPoint presentation with voice narration for eLearning?

Upload your .pptx to SlideSpeak and write narration scripts for each slide. Choose a professional voice (Kore or Charon work well for training content). Generate all voiceovers, then export as a ZIP (images + MP3s) — most LMS platforms like Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, and D2L accept this format. If your LMS supports MP4, use the video export instead.

Do I need to install anything?

No. SlideSpeak runs entirely in your browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, on Windows, Mac, or tablet. Upload your file, write your scripts, generate audio, and download. Nothing to install, no account required for the free trial.

Will my animations and transitions still work after adding voiceover?

Yes — when you export as PPTX with audio embedded or Publish online, your original PowerPoint file is used as-is. Every animation, transition, and slide layout is completely untouched. If you export as MP4 or ZIP, slides appear as static images (animations are not in video frames by definition).

Can I preview the narration before downloading?

Yes. In the Studio, every slide with generated audio shows a play button. Listen to each slide's narration individually before exporting. Not happy with one? Edit that slide's script and click the mic button — only that one slide is re-generated. The rest of your audio stays as-is.

How is the PPTX export different from the ZIP export?

The PPTX export embeds audio directly into your original PowerPoint file — you get one .pptx with a speaker icon on each slide and all animations preserved. The ZIP export gives you separate JPEG and MP3 files (one pair per slide) — this is what most LMS platforms expect when building eLearning courses.

What does the shareable online link look like to the viewer?

The viewer clicks a link and opens your presentation in their browser — it looks like an interactive web slideshow. They click through slides at their own pace and hear the narration for each one. Powered by Microsoft Office Online, so animations and formatting look exactly as in PowerPoint. No download, no account needed on their end.

What happens after the free trial?

The free trial gives you 5 slides to narrate — no account needed. Once you've used those, you can upgrade. The Starter plan ($9.95 one-time) gives you 5 project credits with unlimited slides per project. The Pro plan ($14.95/month) gives you unlimited projects and unlimited slides.
