One of Moodle's long-standing user experience frustrations is the need to return to the main course page to navigate between activities. Students finish a quiz, land on the results page, and have to press 'back' or click the course breadcrumb to move to the next activity — breaking concentration and adding unnecessary clicks. The Activity Navigation plugin solves this with prominent, persistent previous and next navigation buttons on every activity page, allowing students to flow through course content without ever leaving the activity view.
Why your RTO needs this
Reducing friction in the learning journey directly correlates with better completion rates. Every unnecessary click or navigation interruption is an opportunity for a student to get distracted and not return. Activity Navigation is a small, cost-effective change that meaningfully improves the student experience in any Moodle course — particularly in sequential, self-paced delivery where students need to move through many activities in order. It's one of those plugins that once installed, students notice immediately and trainers hear positive feedback about.
Key Features
Previous and Next Buttons
Large, clear navigation buttons appear at the bottom of every Moodle activity — previous on the left, next on the right — in a consistent location.
Completion Awareness
The 'next' button only activates after the student has completed the current activity — preventing skipping ahead in sequential delivery.
Course Page Option
A 'Return to course' link is also included — giving students the option to jump back to the full course view at any time.
Progress Indicator
An optional inline progress indicator shows the student's position in the course (e.g., 'Activity 5 of 12') alongside the navigation buttons.
Works with All Activity Types
Navigation buttons appear on quizzes, pages, H5P activities, assignments, files, and all standard Moodle activity types.
Common Use Cases
- 1Improving flow in self-paced online Certificate courses where students work through many activities in sequence
- 2Reducing navigation confusion for new Moodle users unfamiliar with the LMS interface
- 3Creating a slide-show-like experience for induction and orientation modules with sequential content
- 4Decreasing dropout at activity transitions in high-friction self-paced delivery programs
